A classification proposal for coefficients of variation in Eucalyptus experiments involving survival, growth and wood quality variables Bragantia
Mora,Freddy; Arriagada,Osvin.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to present a classification proposal for coefficients of variation (CV) in Eucalyptus experiments, aiming at providing a useful tool for experiments involving growth, survival and wood quality traits. Ninety-four studies were selected from a search for peer-reviewed journals yielding a total of 508 data. The CVs were classified as low, moderate, high and very high. The mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values, skewness and kurtosis were estimated to describe the distribution shape. The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed that all variables satisfied the assumption of normality (p < 0.05). The results indicated that the growth traits had the highest variability, being variables strongly affected by the...

Classification of coefficients of variation in experiments with commercial layers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Faria Filho,DE; Dias,AN; Veloso,ALC; Bueno,CFD; Couto,FAP; Matos Júnior,JB; Barreto,KZO; Rodrigues,PA; Carneiro,WA.
This study aimed at determining a specific classification of coefficients of variation in experiments with commercial layers. Coefficients of variation were collected from papers published in Brazilian journals between 2000 and 2009 for performance, internal egg quality, and eggshell quality parameters. The coefficients of variation of each parameter were classified as low, intermediate, high, and very high according to the ratio between the median and the pseudo-sigma. It was concluded that the parameters used in experiments with commercial layers have a specific classification of coefficients of variation, and that this must be considered to evaluate experimental accuracy.

Lúcio,Alessandro Dal’Col; Lambrecht,Darlei M; Sari,Bruno G; Krysczun,Dionatan K; Ubessi,Cassiane.
ABSTRACT In order to be considered highly reliable (showing very accurate results), an experiment needs to be very well planned. Defining the experimental plot size and number of replicates is fundamental to control the experimental error at the beginning of the experiment. The aim of this study was to estimate the plot size and the number of replicates sufficient to perform experiments with Cucumis sativus. A uniformity trial was installed in the first week of January 2017. The spacing used was 0.3 m between plants and 1 m between rows, resulting in 12 plants in each of the 12 cultivation rows and each basic experimental unit was composed of one plant. The variables observed in 18 harvests were average fruit mass (MMF, in g), average fruit length (CMF, in...

Feijó,Sandra; Storck,Lindolfo; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal'Col; Lopes,Sidinei José; Garcia,Danton C; Carpes,Ricardo H.
The objectives of this work were to assess zucchini heterogeneity index and fruit weight at different harvest frequencies for plants grown on a protected environment; to estimate the optimum plot size; and to determine the least significant difference among treatments, varying plot size and replication number. Plants of cultivar Caserta were grown in a plastic greenhouse, using spaces of 0.80 x 1.00 among plants and lines, respectively. The following harvest frequencies were studied: fruits harvested daily, (1) at 10:00, (2) at 10:00 and 18:00, (3) at 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 h and; (4) fruits harvested every other day, at 18:00 h. Twenty-seven harvests were carried out, collecting fruits larger than 0.15 m. Plots were planned with 1, 2,...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the optimal size of experimental plots for the evaluation of agronomic characteristics and fruit quality of papaya, by the linear model of plateau response, under soil and climatic conditions of the Recôncavo Baiano region, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The experiment consisted of a uniformity test, with the papaya lineage L78, at 3×2 m spacing, in 16 rows with 22 plants, totaling 352 plants and 2,112 m2 useful area. Each plant was considered as a basic unit, and 11 forms of pre-established plots, with rectangular and row formats, were obtained. The agronomic characteristics and fruit quality were evaluated in the plots. Optimal plot size varied greatly among the variables related to agronomic...

Optimum experimental plot size in the castor bean Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Sampaio Filho,Orlando Melo; Silva,Sebastião de Oliveira e; Donato,Sérgio Luiz Rodrigues; Silva,Simone Alves; Silva,Mauricio dos Santos da.
ABSTRACT Optimum plot size is of fundamental importance for the results, precision and cost-effectiveness of experiments. The aim of this study therefore, was to estimate optimum plot size in a strain of the castor bean by means of the Linear Response Plateau Model (LRPM). The experiment consisted of a test for uniformity, carried out in Cruz das Almas, in the State of Bahia, Brazil. The UFRB-222 strain was used, which was planted at a spacing of 3 m x 1 m, in 10 rows of 37 plants each. The eight central rows were considered, each with 35 plants per row giving a total of 280 plants and a working area of 840 m2. For the evaluations, each plant was taken as one basic unit (bu) with an area of 3 m2, resulting in 280 bu. The characteristics under evaluation...

The spatial and temporal independence of Italian Zucchini production Agronomy
Benz, Vilson; Lúcio, Alessandro Dal’Col; Lopes, Sidinei José.
It is necessary to know the production variability of experimental units in a protected environment, both in terms of space and throughout different harvests. This knowledge helps reduce experimental error and increases result reliability in combination with the adoption of appropriate experimental techniques and cultural management. The objective of this study was to characterize the spatial and temporal independence of Italian Zucchini fruit production as cultivated in a protected environment. The study used production data from exploratory experiments under protected cultivation in the Department of Plant Sciences of the Federal University of Santa Maria. Different units sizes were simulated on the basis of known production values for the number of...

Variability, plot size and border effect in lettuce trials in protected environment Bragantia
Santos,Daniel; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal’Col; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Lopes,Sidinei José; Olivoto,Tiago.
ABSTRACT The variability within rows of cultivation may reduce the accuracy of experiments conducted in a complete randomized block design if the rows are considered as blocks, however, little is known about this variability in protected environments. Thus, our aim was to study the variability of the fresh mass in lettuce shoot, growing in protected environment, and to verify the border effect and size of the experimental unit in minimizing the productive variability. Data from two uniformity trials carried out in a greenhouse in autumn and spring growing seasons were used. In the statistical analyses, it was considered the existence of parallel cultivation rows the lateral openings of the greenhouse and of columns perpendicular to these openings....
